Painted Lampshade & a Quick Guest Room Makeover | Pretty Handy Girl

My mom was coming to visit his month. Since she’s a repeat guest, I wanted to give the guest room a little mini makeover for her. With the addition of some new pillows, curtains and a painted lampshade I gave it a new look in an afternoon.

Here’s the before:

And the after:

You may remember that I already installed new room darkening accordian blinds and curtains.

I also bought two new Allen & Roth covers (from Lowe’s).

I simply zipped them over the pre-existing pillows. Then I pulled a few of my other pillows out of the attic. Presto chango!

I searched and searched for a lampshade that I really liked and settled on this cute silhouetted silver branch shade from Lowe’s as well. But, I wanted to add a little color to coordinate with the room.

I picked up a sample of Valspar’s Arizona Dust color.

Then I used small artist brushes to paint over the darker gray branches.

I think she likes being pretty in pink. She probably also enjoys her spot of honor on the nightstand I made with a door and picket fence.

A little thrift shop chair got a few coats of Miss Mustard Seed yellow milk paint. Then I distressed it with sandpaper and a paint scraper. (I’ll have a tutorial for you at a later date.)

Right before my Mom arrived, I slipped from fresh flowers into the bottles and put out some fresh soap in a tray for her. Freshly unwrapped soaps add a nice scent to the room.

I also swapped out the painting over the bed.

The bedding is the same, I simply rolled down the quilt to show more of the pale yellow blanket.

Our guest room is floral and pinks, because I live with three boys (four if you count the dog.) And I wanted one space in our home that is feminine ;-). I may have went a little overboard on the florals, but it keeps the boys out ;-).

Do you like the changes I made? Or do you think the room is too over the top girly?

Oh gosh, this is a very old painted room. It is a yellow green color. I can’t remember and have long ago thrown the paint away, but it’s close to Sherwin Williams Rice Paddy.

I love it! I don’t think it’s too girly at all. The color combos are awesome!

I just love florals and I spied those same curtains the other day at Lowes. I love the colors in them. I’d feel right at home in this new room.

The room is darling. It isn’t over-the-top girly at all.

It’s fun how just a few touches really changed things and kind of spruced it up.

Your guest room is beautiful & I can certainly feel the love for your mother coming right though my monitor. I bet she is loving every moment of it…but especially being with you & your family.
