Soap Snowballs with a Surprise Inside
I cannot claim authorship of this DIY Gift Idea (Family Fun Magazine), but I can tell you that it is one heck of a fun way to entertain the kids for 15 minutes AND they make great gifts for the kids on your list.
Materials:
- 4 bars Ivory Soap
- 8 plastic or waterproof toys (super balls, lego men, plastic bugs, etc.)
- Food processor or cheese grater
- 1/2 cup water
- Mixing bowl
- Tray
- Saran Wrap
- Tinsel
- Ribbon
Instructions:
Peel the paper wrappers off the soap bars.
Place each bar in the food processor with the cheese grater attachment on (or use a hand held cheese grater) and shred the soap.
Pour 1/4 cup lukewarm water into the shredded soap.
Begin to knead the soap together. Add more water (one tablespoon at a time) as needed. The soap shreds should begin to stick together and develop a clay-like consistency.
Roll a handful of soap into a ball. Split the ball in half and insert a small toy. Close the ball back up and roll it into a tightly formed snowball.
Set the balls aside to harden. Four bars make 8 snowballs (we doubled our recipe and made 16 snowballs.)
Once the soap has hardened, place a square piece of cling wrap onto the table. Put a handful of tinsel on the wrap and nestle a snowball on top of it.
Pull the saran wrap corners to the middle and secure the bundle with a ribbon.
The kids are super excited to work their way through the soap balls we kept. And they are anxious to give the rest away to friends and cousins.
We’re working our way through week two of 10 Days of 15 Minute DIY Gifts. What’s been your favorite so far?
I hope you are getting lots of ideas! And don’t forget to link up your quickie gift ideas on Friday, December 14th!
would any soap work with this or does in need to be ivory for some reason?
Molly,
I’ve seen people use different soaps. So, I’m pretty sure any type will work. I’ve only used Ivory though. It’s cheap and white and smells goooood.
So cute! I make regular glycerin soap and put a toy inside for the kids (it’s clear so they can see it) but this is cute because they can’t see what it is and it’s a ‘snowball’! Great idea!!
I saw your hangout after I made these. That would have been cute to be able to see it. But, it is also fun to be surprised ;-).
This is a great idea for the kids. Love it!
How fun. I bet they enjoyed this! Cheers.
