I’m Going to Rock Your World (While Mine is Upended)

Thank you all for your comments about my post on polybutylene pipes. Since that post my life has been squished into a duffle bag and rolled down a big hill. I’m not sure whether we are coming or going. On Wednesday night we all slept in the house, but we were getting headaches (either from the mold or the gigantic HEPA filters running full blast all over our house. It must be what it’s like to live in the turbine engine of a plane. “WHAT DID YOU SAY?”)

By Thursday morning we were anxious to get the mold remediation on it’s way. But, then we got some bad news. Under our linoleum kitchen floor was another layer of vinyl flooring…a suspiciously older layer of flooring. The disaster team had to send a sample to the lab for asbestos. I seriously never would have thought it would come back positive, but guess what?! …it did. 🙁

At that point we packed all our bags and got the heck of out the house. Lucky for us, we have family that lives close by, so we’re hunkering down with the in laws. (I don’t know what we’d do without them.) I’m a little concerned about how long we’ll be staying here. My mother-in-law better be prepared for when I get stir crazy and start going a little “pretty handy girl” on her home ;-D.

In the midst of our adventures living out of suitcases, the Southern Bloggers Conference started here in Raleigh. I don’t think the timing could have been more perfect to help take my mind off of this musty mess. I’ve been enjoying being surrounded by other creative bloggers. I have more pictures, but can’t download them off my camera until I can get a little time back home.

I so feel for you. When I moved from Raleigh to SC a few years ago, and we decided to move back to NC, the house we bought there had mold, which we didn’t find out about it until my husband’s company was about to buy the house. Of course, it had to be remediated before we could move. What a hassle! Maybe it won’t take too long, since you’ve moved out. At least you get a partial reno out of it! When you have a minute, would you mind listing where you took the bloggers shopping at the conference. I’ve lived in the Raleigh area most of my life, and I don’t know about a place w/ little out buildings. I’m thinking it must be on the north side of town. Thanks.

I am just in awe of your resilience and ability to keep calm. I don’t know how you do it. I am wishing you and your family the best. Hopefully this will be one of those ‘times’ that all of you can look back and laugh at a time that you really wanted to cry. 🙂 Hugs and well wishes to you and your family.

    Hi Brittany,
I am feeling so sorry for all the mess you’ve faced at your place, but thanks God you have some relatives living close by to stay.

Hope all things get better soon.

I know exactly what your going through. We had a pipe break back in March and it flooded half the upstairs and half the basement…came home to 3 inches of water! We lived out of a hotel for a month. There were 8 dehumidifiers running at one point, and they found asbestos in both bathrooms. We quickly fixed up one bath to usable and are finally just about finished with the up bath which is our main one. This was our first remodel project so it’s taken some time evenings and weekends. And we still have to finish the other bath, the kitchen and refinish the wood floors. So, hang in there because it will all be wonderful once its done!

I hated hearing about your horrible situation, Brittany, but so glad you came and hung out with us this weekend. I loved meeting you and hearing the stories about your dad and the extension ladder, and was bummed that my flight left so early and I couldn’t go thrifting with you girls! I’ll be back often!

Glad you moved out. The stress of living there would be worse than the stress of not. Maybe you can find a short term rental if the relatives get too crowded. Don’t worry about the asbestos under the floor. I’m sure it didn’t hurt anyone of you. Most New York apartments had some for years and years. Ours was in the covers to the radiators. We just left it there. Can’t wait to win a chop saw or something like that. Yay!

Wow I can feel the displacement and stress from it way over here in Mi. I’m so sorry you and your family are going through this. I’m one of those people who seem to find a ‘bright side’ to most everything and I’m thankful that this didn’t happen in the dead of winter (the cold, bigger messes, can’t open windows, etc) AND I’m super thankful that you have a great Mom-in-law that’s letting you guys stay with her until it’s overwith. Hang in there Brittany – knowing you and your resourcefulness you’ll come up with a great project from all this! teehee. Thanks for sharing all this too so others can learn from it.
