Easy Wooden Chalkboard Sign | Pretty Handy Girl

Do you keep scraps of wood and say to yourself, “I might need that for something someday.” Well, today is your someday! Grab a scrap (or ask Lowe’s for their scraps) and create this super easy wooden chalkboard sign.

When you’re done, you can turn it into a sign that displays your favorite quote; a plaque welcoming friends; or you could create a fun Christmas Countdown sign!

Materials:

  • Scrap wood (3/4″ thickness works the best)
  • Chalkboard spray paint
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Red paint (I used Miss Mustard Seed Tricycle Milk Paint)
  • White paint pen
  • Chalk
  • Pencil
  • Eye hooks
  • Drill
  • Drill bit slightly smaller than the eye bolts
  • Ribbon
  • Pencil
  • Safety glasses

 

Instructions:

Paint your wood red. Let it dry.

Apply painter’s tape to the edges to create a frame.

Spray your board with chalkboard paint (two light layers works better than one.)

After the chalkboard paint has dried, remove the painter’s tape.

Use a white paint pen to trace around the edges of the chalkboard paint area. Season the chalkboard.

Drill holes into the top two corners of your board.

Twist the screw eyes into the pre-drilled holes. (I like to use a pencil as a handle so my fingers don’t hurt.)

If you desire amazing chalkboard handwriting, print out your letters using the computer. Rub chalk on the back of the print out and then tape it to the board. Trace the letters with a pencil (press firmly.) Remove the printout.

Sharpen your chalk with a make up pencil sharpener. Trace over the transferred letters.

Add some doodles. Thread ribbon through the screw eyes and hang your sign.
