How to Easily Clean Mildew Off Windows

Winter is tough on everyone, but it’s especially tough on your home.  The temperature difference between the outside and inside your home can leave a thick layer of mildew on your windows. Aluminum storm windows are especially prone to this condition. Before you open the windows and let in the warm breeze of Spring, you’ll want to quickly and easily clean mildew off your windows.

This is not one of my favorite cleaning tasks. In the past I used bleach and ended up smelling bleach all day long and probably doing damage to my nose (and brain.) This year I have a new cleaning BFF. The HomeRight Steam Machine Plus is my go to tool for cleaning almost anything! Just like when I cleaned the boys’ stinky bathroom, this little steam cleaner did not disappoint.

To clean the windows, release the hand held HomeRight Steam Machine Plus from the upright mop.

Fill the water reservoir and return it to the handheld unit.

Plug the Steam Machine Plus in and wait for the light to turn blue.

For the majority of the window tracks, I used the round brush attachment. Use medium steam on the tracks and be careful not to hold the steam for too long near the glass.

Periodically, wipe the brush clean on a rag.

To reach into tight spots, swap out the round brush for the linear brush attachment.

Wipe off the tracks and all the surfaces you steamed with a clean rag.

That’s as clean as this window has ever looked! The black you see in the lower right corner is actually a small amount of wood rot I need to fix. (Tutorial for you in the future.)

I can’t speak to whether this will work or not, but I followed up the cleaning with the Endurance BioBarrier Cleaner Prep and the mold and mildew shield. (I’ve been running a test in our shower and I’m 3 months in with no mold yet.) I’ll be sure to update this post in the future if the spray worked.

What Spring cleaning task do you detest? I bet the HomeRight Steam Machine Plus can become your new cleaning BFF for that task.

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by HomeRight. I was sent a Steam Machine Plus to try and was compensated for my time. As always, I’m extremely picky about the products I promote. If I don’t like a product, you won’t see it mentioned. All projects and opinions are my own. I was not told what to write or say about the HomeRight Steam Machine Plus.

Can you tell us what you liked/didn’t like about the machine? I have a Haan that I’m wanting to replace because the steam only lasts a few minutes before I have to shut it off and let it cool down to refill and heat back up again. A real hassle!

This makes it look so simple! I definitely have to look into doing this – I think our home could use a touch up of spring cleanliness like this.
