Looking for a quick and easy DIY kids toy you can make at home?  Let’s make kids scooters!  Hello Pretty Handy Readers I’m Jaime from That’s My Letter here to share how to make these DIY Kids Scooters using scrap wood and a few hardware bits.

My 9 year old daughter is here giving the scooter a whirl and she fits fine but it’s really my 7 year old boy who loves the scooters.  (Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of him on a scooter, but you’ll have to trust me.)  I would say this DIY toy is aimed at kids 8 and younger as they especially love pushing each other on the scooters!

If you happen to have a piece of 2×12 scrap wood lying around then this project was made for you.  The chunky 1 1/2″ thick material is solid and sturdy and can be painted any color you choose.

Step 2: Trim off curved edge with a jigsaw.  Go slow through the thick 2x material and flip the piece over if necessary to get a nice cut on both sides.  Sand all edges well.

Step 3: Paint as desired.

Step 4: Add the wheels using 1 1/4″ self tapping screws.

Hi there, what kind of casters do you recommend? I’m trying to decide between hard rubber and polypropylene. I’d love to make these for my nephews (ages 2-7) but want to be sure they will be durable.
    Thanks!

These are very fun. My son’s kindergarten had them. I remember the teacher in the gym constantly reminding them to hang on to the board and keep their hands inside the handles. That way when they would bang together their hands were protected. With that in mind I would suggest choosing handles that are large enough for the kids to get behind and hang on to the board directly.
