I admit it, I’m crushing on green doors lately. If you know me well, you know that I painstakingly stripped my front doors a few years ago and repainted them bright green. Now I’ve been thinking more and more about front door colors for Saving Etta. I hope you’ll help me decide by taking a look at all these fabulous green doors!

How To Build a Sliding Mirror Door

How to build a sliding mirror door:

Hello Pretty Handy Readers! Jaime here from That’s My Letter and today I am sharing a sliding mirror project that is the finishing touch on my newly made over walk-in closet. I will show you how to build a sliding mirror door using wood, wheels and pipe fittings.

This sliding mirror is my solution to a small walk-in closet with no wall space and no back of the door option for a mirror. The mirror slides across the room on stationary wheels and a galvanized steel pipe track.

My pipe extends beyond the built-ins (mainly because that’s the pipe I had on hand) but this also allows for full access to the built-in compartments.

In the photo below you can see the pipe extends beyond the built-ins at the ceiling:

Simple finger pull holes allow you to glide the mirror along the pipe. You could get fancy with hardware here but I took the minimalist approach.

Stationary wheels keep the mirror in place while eliminating the need for any lower track system.

Hello super slim profile! The whole mirror and wood support is only 1 1/2″ thick so the mirror does not protrude out into the room.

Hello Pretty Handy Girl readers! I’m thrilled to be hanging out at Brittany’s place today sharing a quick and original way to decorate for Halloween with this DIY Halloween Canvas Door Decor.

DIY Halloween Canvas Door Decor

If you follow Today’s Creative Life (formally Today’s Creative Blog), then you know I’m not talented like Brittany in the ways of building, but I sure do love me some quick and easy ways to bring more creativity to my home!

I share DIY Decor, DIY Projects and Recipes for families. You’ll find easy to follow tutorials for bringing creativity to your home and a lot more for holidays!

I’m always looking for something a little out of the ordinary for decorating my door for Halloween. Sure, I could just slap a wreath on the door and call it good, but that would be way to sensible.

Last year, I created a fun Halloween wreath from a ceiling medallion.

I love the way it turned out and may use it for my Halloween mantel this year.

This year, my ideas kept coming back to using fabric or canvas somehow. My first idea was to use Iron On Transfers with the fabric from a drop cloth and then, I remembered I had some printable cotton canvas that was printer ready.

Materials:

Printable Graphic (I used The Graphics Fairy)
Printable Cotton Canvas
Ribbon
Stick
Paper hole punch
Paper Trimmer

Instructions:

1. I found and downloaded the image I wanted from The Graphics Fairy, as I do for all my iron on transfer projects. She has just about any image you’d ever want for any time of year. Such a great resource.

2. I used PicMonkey to create the text and frame, but any photo editing tool would work. Of course you could just print the image only and keep it really simple.

3. I printed it on printable cotton canvas. This particular paper ended up having a self adhesive backing, so I just left the protective paper backing in place.

4. Using a paper trimmer, I trimmed the bottom.

5. I punched a hole in each upper corner with a paper hole punch.

6. I tied a coordinating ribbon to a stick from the yard (actually I broke it off my lilac bush) and called it good!

After I got it hung up and looked at it for a day or so, I think I may try to age it a bit for an older distressed look. You can do that easily by brushing on brewed tea and lying it out to dry.

I like the way it looks. It’s original and can be used anywhere in the house. The possibilities are plenty!

Upcycled Cabinet Door Chalkboard Art

Upcycled Cabinet Door Quote Art | Pretty Handy Girl

What do you do with an old cabinet door? Besides keep it with your wood scraps for ten years like I did (not recommended.) You can create pre-framed art! Today I have an easy Upcycled Cabinet Door Chalkboard Art project for you. If you have an old cabinet door, some paint, and a stencil, you can have yourself a unique and personalized art piece for your wall! Easy art!

Materials:

Cabinet door
Chalkboard paint
Foam brush
Sandpaper
Antiquing wax
Wax brush
Clean rag
Craft paint or chalky paint
Stencil brush
Painter’s Tape
Pencil
Stencil or cut vinyl

Optional: Stain and foam brush

Instructions:

Paint the inside panel of your cabinet door with chalkboard paint. After the paint has dried, lightly sand any imperfections. Apply a second coat, brushing the paint in the opposite direction as the first coat.

If you have an unstained cabinet door, you may want to stain it for an aged look.

Apply painter’s tape to the inside face of the cabinet door.

Paint the frame portion of the cabinet door. Allow to dry and apply a second coat of paint. Read more

Home is Where the Heart Is – Door Decor

How about an unusual front door decor idea today? Jaime from That’s My Letter here to share this house shape door decor project with free plans to make your own.

A little play on “home is where the heart is,” this door decor is definitely different and not your typical wreath. I used 1×3 pine boards to make the house shape then added the cut out hearts to hang in the middle. (Yes the house shape does look like an arrow. If you want to make an arrow shape, those plans are below as well.)

This would also make great indoor wall art. Imagine all the paint color possibilities!

Supplies:

1 – 1″ x 3″ x 6′ pine board
1/4″ plywood scraps
miter saw
measuring tape
pencil
wood glue
finish nailer
1 1/4″ finish nails
3/4″ finish nails
scroll saw or jigsaw
sandpaper
wire hanger
drill
1/8″ drill bit
wood putty
white spray paint
red acrylic craft paint
paintbrush
clear exterior grade polyurethane spray

Below are the step-by-step instructions to make your own wood house shape door decor. Always follow all precautions and safety rules when using power tools.

Cut List:

1 – 1×3 @ 12 3/4″, one end 45 degree miter (roof)
1 – 1×3 @ 12″, one end 45 degree miter (roof)
2 – 1×3 @ 2 1/2″, one end 45 degree miter (roof overhang)
2 – 1×3 @ 13″ (sides)
1 – 1×3 @ 9 1/2″ (base)

Step 1: Assemble roof. Attach long side to short side using glue and 1 1/4″ finish nails.

Step 2: Add roof overhang pieces to mitered ends of roof. Use glue and 3/4″ finish nails here. Below demonstrates how to cut these super short mitered pieces. Read more
