Pretty Handy Girl in a Box Giveaway and on being 40!

June 23rd 2012 - It's a great day! Taken with my phone.

Good morning! I woke up today and was happy to be alive. I am grateful for my health, my family and my friends. And, I am grateful to be 40.

Believe it or not, I used to be shy and self conscious. I hated middle school and all the girls that made fun of me. Luckily I had some friends who accepted my geekiness in high school. And most importantly, I met this guy in high school:

Baby wearing and vacuuming! I know, he's hot isn't he?!

Pretty Handsome Guy and I have aged together, although we are still in disbelief that we are older than some of our physicians! REALLY?! I still feel like I am in my 20’s. And yet, I am glad I’m not in my 20’s. I like the self confidence that comes with age. I like the acceptance of myself and who I am. I will never be a supermodel, and so what! Who wants that kind of pressure to stay thin and beautiful anyway. I know what I love to do now, and I love doing it. I like that I can laugh at myself. Afterall, if you can’t laugh at yourself, what gives you the right to laugh at anyone else?!

40 feels young to me. Sure, I’ve noticed a few changes: My hips have not forgiven me for being pregnant with two babies and inflict pain occasionally. My eyes play tricks and make me hold the menu forward and backward until I can read it. But, these symptoms are nothing. I have family members who live with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue. I will be grateful for every day that I do not suffer from these or other debilitating illnesses.

So, Whooooo Hooooo! It’s my 40th birthday today! And I have a gift for you!

I am stepping out of my comfort zone and am sharing a video with you today. I have so much to pack into the “Pretty Handy Girl in a Box” giveaway that I figured it would be easier to create a video to show you the contents (instead of filling this post with photos.) Be sure to put some ear plugs in, I am singing!

    Happy Birthday!!!!
Oh my. You outdid yourself with that box of goodies. Whoever (whomever? I never get that right!) wins is SUPER LUCKY!
What I love about your blog: That it is teaching me things I always wanted to learn but was afraid to ask about or try. Your goal of empowering women is working :)
What I’d like to see: Keep doing what you’re doing. Make it basic as can be for people like me who are really starting from scratch.Specific projects? I want to make plank walls. Cheaply but not cheap looking. I don’t even know how to use a power saw or which one to buy. I want to take upper kitchen cabinets off the walls- I’m afraid I don’t know how or what would be behind those cabinets that I’d have to patch up. Same with some weird formica backsplash action that’s going on. If I get it off the wall, will the wall come with? How the heck will I fix that? I hate my older sliding glass doors. How can I make them look better on the cheap or replace with something else on the cheap? Replacing electrical fixtures in my bathroom. Fixing a ceiling fan that won’t turn on without getting myself electrocuted. Fixing a walkway on the cheap that was half dug up and replaced with pea gravel – other half concrete. If you ever need a project idea, feel free to email me. I’ve got more 😉 Seriously- happy birthday- have an awesome day!!

  45. Happy birthday! The box looks AMAZING!

  46. Happy Birthday! Your blog inspires me to try to do more home improvement stuff on my own.

  47. I love your blog. I mean you are real. You have GREAT ideas, and you are honest. I love it, and look forward to it everyday. And the fact that you are 40 and loving what you do, even in this new venture is encouraging. Thanks!

  48. And I follow you on Twitter!!!

  49. Oh and Happy B-day! And you don’t look 40 at ALL!

  50. I love how you have reminded me that I CAN DIY! As a person who is nervous in this area, I am forever thankful for your patient tutorials and beautiful inspiration on your blog. Thanks for letting us be a part of the journey with you! Happy birthday!

  51. JOYEUX ANNIVERSAIRE !!!! Je te souhaite tout ce qu’il y a de mieux pour tes 40 ans, et encore des tonnes de projets pour les 40 à venir !!!

Translation (!!! If you need it ??!!) : Happy Birthday !!!! I wish you the best for your big 40 and a lot of projects for the next 40 years…

I never expect to win something, I know that France isn’t the “next door” ! I just want you to know how your blog help me change my life as a stay-at-home mother of five. When my husband and I decide it will be better for all of us to quit my job to give a more “relax” family life to the kids, I was so in a “I-don’t-know-how-to-do-that! mood” for everything… I read your blog since september of last year, and your projects (some for the house, others with the kids, or some just for me!) are really inspiring and kick my french “derrière” for trying to do things by myself. And… It teach me english 😉 (not too bad, huh ?) Thanks for all thoses things you do !

I have spent my life watching you, adoring you, and swelling with pride that you are my big sister. A supermodel you may not be, but a superhuman you will always be, and a gorgeous one at that.

    Love & Happy Birthday,

  134. Happy Birthday. I love how you inspire me to get things done. You make the projects easy to follow, and fun.

Been following your blog for almost a year now & have gotten a ton of great ideas from it. Keep up the good work!

  154. Well, what a surprise, I thought you were in your twenties! Really. What I like about your blog is the organization. When you do a project and explain it to us your instructions are really, really good. From a person with ADD. You make it seem that everyone can accomplish anything. You also let your personality show through, and that’s good. I like that there are no recipes. I need this prize. I just painted my first Annie Sloan project and I’m ready to make things now. Ann

  155. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I’ve heard 40 is pretty cool. 😀

I best thing about your blog is that the stuff you do shows that home improvement isn’t JUST guys stuff! I have a very handy husband, so I don’t do much, but i could if I needed to. And you are so creative! Thanks for all the good ideas! (And the awesome giveaway!)

  156. Deborah in Atlanta says:

I’m a visual person, so I love photos (and yes, even your Vlog) because I learn better “seeing” than “reading” about a process. I’m loving your blog, and other than tutorials for non-DIY people like me, I can’t think of anything you need to do different.

  157. Deborah in Atlanta says:

    I’m a follower via GFC

  158. Deborah in Atlanta says:

My favorite thing about your blog is that you make me think to myself “I can do that”. Up until now I’ve relied on my hubby to do everything handy, which he is great at and doesn’t complain about it doing it all, but now I feel like I can accomplish things myself. Thank you.

  172. Andrea Skeens says:

  213. Happy Birthday to YOU!!!
Love the handy tips, & love that you throw in some family stuff…. nice to get to know a little about the person behind the blog…

  214. What do I like about your blog?? Let me count the ways you inspire me …. okay, that would take a long time. Suffice it to say that since I stumbled upon your blog several months ago, I have been so inspired to use my hands (without help!) to “create” and “decorate” … I designed, built, painted, and distressed an adorable step stool for the bathroom (for my daughters) and I have so much more on my to-do list and it’s all thanks to you and your blog inspiring and empowering me! Don’t ever stop!

  215. I Facebooked about you!

  216. …been following you since I found you!

  217. I love the vlog – it’s great to put a voice together with the face! This giveaway is fantastic – so generous of you…I’m crossing my fingers! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Brittany! BTW, I turned 40 a couple of months ago myself and I agree with you, I feel 20 inside yet I’m glad I’m not. I recently lost 35 pounds and I am thrilled to be 40 and lighter! Don’t know why I’m writing all this, just excited about this giveaway I guess … thank you for all that you do!!

  238. And finally my comment is “You rock!” Whew…maybe i’ll win for once! :) Enjoy your fabulousness!

  239. There isn’t anything that I don’t like about your site. What I do like about your site: the design -makes your site fun and easy on the eyes, the projects – are doable for the average or less than average DIYer, the step-by-step – you have a great way of making directions and plans understandable…there is nothing I have ever read that I was confused on or didn’t understand!

  240. Happy Birthday!

  241. Wishing you a day filled with many blessings and much love. Happy Birthday! Love your 40th birthday photo. Now for a qualifying entry response to what I like about your blog….. There is so much to love about it that it is hard to answer with just one sentence. Your dedication to helping others through your tutorials is at the top of the list. I always feel better after reading your posts and having a dose of your great sense of humor. I learn so much by reading and seeing your tutorials. OK that is a start and I’ll stop here with a welcome to the over the hill club. It only gets better with each passing year after this.

  242. I follow your blog through email.

  243. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday PHG Happy Birthday to you. May you be blessed with many more.

  244. Happy Birthday!
First off, I love that you are in NC bc that is my home and we live far, far away in Montana!

I love that you include helpful tips on what equipment is worth it and what you need for each project.

I like how you show things step-by-step and how you have a great sense of humor and don’t take yourself too seriously.

    Thanks so much!

  245. I shared this on my Facebook page Alice Voyles Parson.

  246. Happy Birthday! I love your attitude!!

To be honest, I never comment on things like this. (I never win anything … Seriously, just how it goes.) I did however want to tell you what I like about your blog. EVERYTHING.

I’m a single mom who has a dad and lots of brothers who always took care of things when I was growing up. (My mother desperately wanted me to be “dainty” & wasn’t big on me helping with the other stuff.) When I was married, he took care of all this stuff. Once again, VERY defined roles. There’s a lot that I never learned how to do.

Your blog gives me a great resource to learn skills that allow me to be self-sufficient in a lot of ways. It’s a great feeling not to have to run off and ask for help with everything along the way.

  247. I’d leave a comment even if I didn’t want the prizes – and I DO! When I saw the pic of your Hubs it made me think of Everyone Loves Raymond – when Ray was vacuuming the drapes and Deborah said he’d never been more hot 😀

Why do I love your blog? Well, obviously because you give the best info around. Seriously! But mainly because I feel like I really know you! God willing, I’ll make it to Blissdom this year and maybe actually meet you IRL!

Oh, I already follow you via GFC, subscribe by email, and Twitter. Facebook? I think so, but I’ll go check now 😉

  254. Just wanted to wish you a very happy birthday and let you know that you share the exact bday with my hubby who also turned 40 on the 23rd of June. Hope your day was as nice as his turned out to be!!

  255. Jennifer says:

I LOVE the fact that you talk about safty first. The other day I decided (very last minute) that I didn’t like our front steps. My Dad came over with some tools and we got to work on it. As I’m hammering away you popped into my head and I thought hmmmmmmm I should be wearing better eye protection (I just had my everyday glasses on) and gloves. Lucikly I didn’t need extra glasses that day but I did end up with a sliver and a bruised ankle from hitting it with the hammer. Do you have any protection from personal klutziness?????? Thank you for being the voice in my head to be a better DIYer.

  256. Jennifer says:

I Tweeted about your Vlog :) jrosencr.

  257. Jennifer says:

  259. Stephanie C says:

I like your blog because it inspires me to try something new.

  260. As a teacher, I am constantly encouraging my students that they can do things they think they can’t. It’s all in your attitude. With myself, however, I sometimes forget this. Especially when it comes to diy things around the house. As a single mom to an active 6 year old boy, finances are often tight. Being able to diy things helps make life a little easier. Thank you for posting the how-tos and encourageing and reminding me, that if other people can do something, so can I. It’s all in my attitude and belief in myself. Thanks for reminding me and everyone else about the power of self-belief.

  261. I love how you don’t talk down to anyone and your instructions are easy to follow. You’ve great a sense of humor, too!

  262. I get email updates through feedburner!

  263. I love the flower in your hair – it makes me think you’re thinking of heading to Hawaii to hula :)

Happy Birthday again and Happy Blogiversary.

  267. Such a fun giveaway! I love that you not only include beautiful craft projects but also the practical things like fixing a toilet. Because some of us have non-handy husbands!

  268. Lidy Caldera says:

I LOVE your blog! I love all the projects you do…not just cutesy stuff but real nitty gritty stuff too.

Happy Birthday and blogiversary. I make up words too so I think blogiversary is a good one. :)

  270. Happy birthday! 40 is great and it is so good to be thankful for our many blessings. I love all your how-to posts that walk me through step-by-step. You are so positive and encouraging! Thanks for offering such an awesome give away!

  271. Charlotte says:

I really like your blog because you are always giving me ideas of ways I can “fix” problems in my house without asking the Hubs….he hates to repair anything but, he does love to eat, so I guess he might try to work on the stove if it were broken..

  272. Charlotte says:

I follow you on feedburner and have for a while.

  273. Happy Birthday!!!! I love your BLOG!!!

  276. Donna Hollingsworth says:

Love the vlog!!!! You so crazy!!! I remember turning 40. My eyesight was the first to go. I am in my mid-40’s and do not feel like it. I feel like I did when I was 20, except for the bad vision, can’t get out of the floor without help, foot pain, back aches, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…..maybe I am beginning to feel……29!!!

  277. Donna Hollingsworth says:

I would love to see more trash to treasure ideas!!! You are so good at this blog, I love it just the way it is!

I like how your blog has plenty of pictures on the tuts! Oh how I hate diy blogs that dont have pics!

  288. Theresa says:

Random note, my birthday was June 13 (Gemini) and you are Cancer !

  289. I love to see a “female” do anything she is up to trying. I grew up with the you’re not a boy you can’t do that. I’ve empowered my daughter to be just like you. Thank goodness she had a good dad and she was always helping him. She is pretty handy herself and thanks to you can go to your site and get step by step info that I am too far away to show her. Thanks for all your info and great pics, etc for these projects. But most of all “welcome” to the group of “more mature” and accepting ourselves. It is so liberating!!!!
Keep up the good work, you look great! Boy did you get a great husband, and “cute” to boot!!!

  290. happy bday. great blog and tutorials. tx for keeping it real. :)

  291. Elizabeth says:

    Happy birthday! :)

Have to say love your blog and I get a kick out of you being a local-to-me blogger, one of the few that I regularly read. (Not sure why that is, I guess I read more by interest than location?) Anyway, I didn’t realize you had only been blogging a year, you seem like a “pro” to me. :) Look forward to seeing what you come up with this next year, I have learned a lot from you already! :)

  292. I think your blog is wonderful! I love seeing all the projects that you do and learning from your experiences. Tutorials are always appreciated! Thanks!

  293. I follow you and subscribe via Feedburner!

  294. I love your blog because I can learn HOW to do things which is a relatively new adventure for me! I recently was able to refer to your blog to find out what was wrong with my sink and learn how to fix it which was totally cool! And I need your blog because my husband is no handy man!!! In fact, the other day, he “fixed” the door and actually ended up making it worse :O)
    Oh well!
I would like to know more about installing laminate flooring (sorry if you already did this post) or even about cleaning and maintaining the jets on my jetted tub (what a pain that is!.

  295. Happy Birthday! I am nearly 38 and still feel like a kid! I am grateful for my family and my health! I know you are, too! Enjoy life and don’t get caught up in age…why?? Life is too short! Hope your birthday is HAPPY!!

    Happy birthday month!

  299. I absolutely love love love your blogs!!! I am getting ready to turn a twin size head/foot board into a bench for my back yard… havent decided if I want to do this also to the other bed or not. Thank you so much for all your inspirations! Im an avid DIY’er and cannot imagine paying someone to do the things I can do on my own lol

  300. Im also a google follower and FB follower =)

  301. Cindy S. says:

What an awesome collection of gifts! Thanks for a great giveaway!!! Happy Birthday and Blogiversary!

I love that you help me feel empowered to do things that I would otherwise tell myself I couldn’t tackle. You make it do-able. Plus, you’re very innovative and creative, and it’s inspiring. Please, though, do not give up your day job—I do not think an entertainment career is in your future! =op

  302. My whole family (kids, DH, mom, sister, sisters-in-law, cousins, etc.) loves your blog. My 68-year-young mother just told me this weekend, “Brittany really inspires me to do more around my house”! My kids love seeing Pretty Handy Dog helping with your projects, and my 5-year-old loved it when you repurposed the bed as a bench, and the most recent bookcase. We were just at a friend’s house for a birthday party, and he loved swinging in their hammock on their screened-in porch. He saw the porch on your blog and wants to know how you did it so we can put a roof on our deck! :)I’m ambitious, but maybe not that ambitious!

  303. Also, a very Happy Birthday and Blogiversary! Thank you so much for sharing with us! I finally worked up the nerve to tackle the slow drain in our upstairs bathroom…yikes. I followed the tutorial on how to retrieve a lost pin. Thanks to you, it was super-easy. Thanks to my son, it was super-gross. He helped me and learned two valuable lessons: We can tackle home projects, and crayons and wallpaper do not belong down the drain. :)

  304. I just found your blog, but the first thing I noticed is that I couldn’t find projects easily. like if I was looking for a specific project, I would have to know when it was posted. I’ve noticed this with other blogs as well and am a fairly new blog reader and didn’t know if its even possible to change it or add another tab that categorizes your posts.
On a brighter note, :) I love how many pictures and illustrations you use, and how many giveaways you have!

  305. posted on FB.

Comment about the blog. Honestly, I love it as is. You are real a d do real projects. How about helping a reader out once a month or so, and giving advice or helping someone local complete a project they didn’t think they could DIY. But really the site is fab!

  324. I’m a follower on Facebook. Posted on my wall page.

  325. Well, I know I’m kinda late, so let me say “Happy belated Birthday!”. Being 40 really is great. Like the commercial says, I wouldnt go back to 20 unless I could take my 40-something brain with me. No truer words have been spoken!

  326. I really can’t think of anything I don’t like about your blog. There are many things, however, that I DO like. A couple that come to mind are how you list all of the tools needed for a project, and how you provide pics of each step so there’s no guessing if I’m doing it correctly.

  327. I was not gonna enter. . but I really want to win that wine crate, the paint brushes, and salt and pepper shakers. . .I LOVE seeing your blog grow!!!

  328. I absolutely love how fearless you are with your DIY projects! And how clear your tutorials are. And, how you support other bloggers. Basically, you rock. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!
