Plans to Create a Library Reading Retreat

The elementary school library at my kids’ school is one of my favorite spots to volunteer. The main library has soaring ceilings with windows and lots of natural light. It is truly a pleasure to spend an hour volunteering to shelve books.

But, there’s one spot that seems like the forgotten corner. It’s a bit of a cave with less natural light and lower ceilings.

This corner of the library houses the picture books and easy reader books, and is often the introduction to reading for Kindergartners. As you know, instilling a love of reading is crucial for young children. Fostering a love of books and reading can be paramount to a child’s future.

With this in mind, the school librarian and I decided to turn this dark corner into a reader’s retreat — an inviting spot for kids to explore, relax and READ. As fate so often happens, contacted me and asked if I’d like to complete a room makeover with credit to their online store. I immediately thought of the school library.

If you’ve shopped on Overstock before, you know that your money can go far because they have good quality furniture, home décor, electronics and much more for a lot less! (They also have a section called World Stock that has a virtual marketplace of artisan goods available for purchase.)

When you buy from the World Stock section, 60-70% of the purchase price goes back to the artisan and suppliers! What a great way to help less fortunate communities around the world.

Here are our plans for the early reader section:

It’s a twilight forest-themed nook where children can grab a book and curl up in a comfy bean bag or cushion to read. The wooden tree branches will help soften the edges of the corners and help create a cozy enveloping area. And the rug…well the texture on the shag rug beckons the kids to run their fingers through the fibers. The bamboo hamper is actually going to help corral the stuffed furry friends.)

We’re going to paint the walls and ceiling with the help of some other volunteers. Finally we’ll add silver wall decals in the shape and color of moonlit trees. Oh, and speaking of moon, there will be a new wall sconce to add some warm ambient light in the corner.

Disclosure: I was provided with $1000 credit to shop and purchase items for a room makeover. I was not told what to write or what project to complete. I was not swayed to write a positive post, as I’ve shopped with many times before. Learn more about my disclosure statement policy here.

  28. Hi, thank you so much for this chance to win. I have been a follower of yours for quite some time and love each and every post! 35. What great library ideas & plans you have Brittany! I used to volunteer all the time at my children’s school when they were in grade school & beyond. I actually moved almost single handedly an entire library with my large car at the time to a new school building from an older one. You’re bringing back memories here.

I am still sitting here two hours later, and I have “spent” almost $1000 while window shopping on it has been an interesting couple of hours, and I have learned much about my personal decorating style. To start, I know now that I have expensive tastes. Keeping my wish to $100 was challenging. I love room screens, no matter what the point of origin. I learned, too, that I love all things Indian and Moroccan. My absolute favorite item is the Sahara Iron Mirror, that comes in one cent short of $100 at $99.99. Thanks for the opportunity to window shop. It was great fun!

  46. I need a new light for my kitchen! My husband got tired of the ceiling fan in our basement with the low ceilings, so he switched out the light over our table with the stupid fan from downstairs and I hate it! A pretty chandelier would look sooooooo much nicer! 😀

  47. I really love the Mango Wood Palace Window Mirror for in my powder room and could use the gift card to purchase it!!
