Hostess Gifts in a Paint Can {Lowe’s Creative Idea}

Paint Can Hostess Gift Idea | Pretty Handy Girl

As the holiday party invites start to roll in, you might be struggling to come up with a new hostess gift idea. These chalkboard painted buckets are a quick and easy way to throw together a unique gift basket that will fill the recipient with joyful scents and treats. I took half an hour and lined up a bunch of these metal paint cans to paint a stripe around the center.

When dry and seasoned I can grab one and write a personalized message. Then I’ll fill it with a candle, DIY scented room spray, a pillow case, lotion or soap dispenser, a gift card to Lowe’s and of course some Hershey’s kisses! If you have an eagle eye, you may have picked up that I used paint stirrers decorated with washi tape (or painted with chalkboard paint) to use as the gift tag.

Instructions:

Paint a band of chalkboard paint with the foam brush. Let it dry and add a second coat.

After the paint has dried wait 24 hours.  Season the chalkboards by rubbing a piece of chalk all over the band. Wipe off the chalk with a dry rag. Store the pails away until you need to grab one for a hostess gift.

Decorate the sides with a personalized chalk message. I like using Allen + Roth decorative pillow covers. It’s fun to either throw a cover onto an old pillow to dress it up for the holidays. Or the gift recipient can use the Lowe’s gift card to buy the pillow insert.

  1. The paint can is a terrific idea. However, I would not be able to duplicate the wonderful lettering on the can (zero artistic ability here). Could I stencil something on the chalkboard paint? If so, what kind of paint (?) could I use?

  2. Linda Pemberton says:

    I LOVED this idea! I am so inspired by you, as well as Nicole Curtis on DIY Rehab Addict, that I can hardly stand it! My next tool will be a nail gun, and also maybe a Dremel Saw Max. Maybe when I’m asked for Christmas gift ideas I’ll mention one. This is such a great idea! For the DIY’er you could line the bucket with red shop cloths or something like that from the painter’s dept at Lowe’s or HD. I also liked your pen and ink dessert plates. Great idea! Thought of doing this for my daughter and doing their first initials or just do one with their last name or initial.

  3. I love this idea too Brittany. This could even be a housewarming gift to someone who needs to remodel or redecorate without a Christmas theme. Awesome!

  4. Very cute idea, Brit!

  5. I’m a Realtor (as well as a crafter) and this is a perfect gift for my clients. I often give a Lowe’s gift card, along with some tools and cleaning items. What a lovely way to present them. Love that I can make several at once and store until needed.
