Have you ever been browsing Pinterest or the blog world and come across an artist that has literally left your mouth hanging open? Well Karen from MosaicWorks may have caused me to drool a bit on my keyboard. I immediately asked her if she’d like to share a tutorial with you.

But, first let me give you a little background about Karen. She studied Illustration in Art School and ended up as a graphic designer (the similarities are uncanny.) She also authored and illustrated a children’s book called Mr. Bob’s Magic Ride in the Sky. She lives in Oshawa, Ontario with her husband, two daughters, and  two dogs (William and Kate…the royal canine couple.) She’s a blogger and an extremely talented mosaic artist! You MUST follow her blog at MosaicWorks.ca. Her creative projects are brilliant and her musings and short photo posts are enough to lighten your day.

Without further chatter, I turn you over to Karen!

Hello Pretty Handy Girl readers. I’m a mosaic artist who, like Brittany, is always up for a good DIY.

Today I’d like to share with you how I made The Colour Wheel Mirror.

With all my mirrors I start with (3) a paint by number of sorts. With the canvas ready and the supplies gathered (4) I’m good to go for laying things down.

One 3/4″ vitreous glass tile (using glass tile nippers) is cut into 6ths (5). These pieces (tesserae*) are then laid down and glued into place (6).

When the mosaic is complete (7) the mirror is dropped into place and the back is wired up for hanging (8).

And that’s that. Then it’s onto to the next project…

*tessera, n pl -serae [-səˌriː] (Fine Arts & Visual Arts / Ceramics) a small square tile of stone, glass, etc., used in mosaics panels.
Mosaicking began as a passion for me. In 2005 I turned that passion into a business. Mosaicworks is a small design studio that puts a contemporary spin on the ancient art of mosaics. Specializing in custom made, one of a kind mirrors and panels.

Thanks for having me. I hope you’ll visit my blog and follow along for more mosiacs, home décor inspiration and more! I also create commissioned pieces of art, just contact me for more information.
