June 23rd 2012 - It's a great day! Taken with my phone.
Good morning! I woke up today and was happy to be alive. I am grateful for my health, my family and my friends. And, I am grateful to be 40.
Believe it or not, I used to be shy and self conscious. I hated middle school and all the girls that made fun of me. Luckily I had some friends who accepted my geekiness in high school. And most importantly, I met this guy in high school:
Pretty Handsome Guy and I have aged together, although we are still in disbelief that we are older than some of our physicians! REALLY?! I still feel like I am in my 20′s. And yet, I am glad I’m not in my 20′s. I like the self confidence that comes with age. I like the acceptance of myself and who I am. I will never be a supermodel, and so what! Who wants that kind of pressure to stay thin and beautiful anyway. I know what I love to do now, and I love doing it. I like that I can laugh at myself. Afterall, if you can’t laugh at yourself, what gives you the right to laugh at anyone else?!
40 feels young to me. Sure, I’ve noticed a few changes: My hips have not forgiven me for being pregnant with two babies and inflict pain occasionally. My eyes play tricks and make me hold the menu forward and backward until I can read it. But, these symptoms are nothing. I have family members who live with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue. I will be grateful for every day that I do not suffer from these or other debilitating illnesses.
So, Whooooo Hooooo! It’s my 40th birthday today! And I have a gift for you!
I am stepping out of my comfort zone and am sharing a video with you today. I have so much to pack into the “Pretty Handy Girl in a Box” giveaway that I figured it would be easier to create a video to show you the contents (instead of filling this post with photos.) Be sure to put some ear plugs in, I am singing!

What an awesome collection of gifts! Thanks for a great giveaway!!! Happy Birthday and Blogiversary!
I love that you help me feel empowered to do things that I would otherwise tell myself I couldn’t tackle. You make it do-able. Plus, you’re very innovative and creative, and it’s inspiring. Please, though, do not give up your day job—I do not think an entertainment career is in your future! =op
My whole family (kids, DH, mom, sister, sisters-in-law, cousins, etc.) loves your blog. My 68-year-young mother just told me this weekend, “Brittany really inspires me to do more around my house”! My kids love seeing Pretty Handy Dog helping with your projects, and my 5-year-old loved it when you repurposed the bed as a bench, and the most recent bookcase. We were just at a friend’s house for a birthday party, and he loved swinging in their hammock on their screened-in porch. He saw the porch on your blog and wants to know how you did it so we can put a roof on our deck!
I’m ambitious, but maybe not that ambitious!
Also, a very Happy Birthday and Blogiversary! Thank you so much for sharing with us! I finally worked up the nerve to tackle the slow drain in our upstairs bathroom…yikes. I followed the tutorial on how to retrieve a lost pin. Thanks to you, it was super-easy. Thanks to my son, it was super-gross. He helped me and learned two valuable lessons: We can tackle home projects, and crayons and wallpaper do not belong down the drain.
I just found your blog, but the first thing I noticed is that I couldn’t find projects easily. like if I was looking for a specific project, I would have to know when it was posted. I’ve noticed this with other blogs as well and am a fairly new blog reader and didn’t know if its even possible to change it or add another tab that categorizes your posts.
I love how many pictures and illustrations you use, and how many giveaways you have!
On a brighter note,
posted on FB.
I follow you on FB.
I’m glad to see there is hope yet for my husband
maybe vacuuming and baby carrying days are ahead after all
I enjoy reading your blog because not only is it informational, but delivered with an engaging sense of humor! ♪
Also, I am now following you on Facebook. Does this count as two or three entries now? Hahaha
Feedburner – I really enjoy your blog!
Hi PHG! Happy BIRTHDAY! I like your date of birth as it also my sister’s birthday! I love your blog because your tips are actionable, easy to follow, and you simply inspire me to do more of my home projects on my own! Last week end! I had projects galore, and proudly surprised my significant other when I pulled out a level from my tool box to hand some pictures! I love your blog! Happy belated! Judi
I’m also a reader from Canada (taking my chances!). But, I love your blog for the simple reason of inspiring other women to get out there and create something!
I am a crafty girl myself and love to see all the great things you make. I am working on that mudroom bench/hanger, and a ladder display case. LOVE! Thanks for the great ideas
HAPPY belated BIRTHDAY! Here’s to many years of crafting.

Keeping my fingers crossed on this….
My random comment first:
Happy birthday! You make 40 look good and fun! I’m not far behind and think I wanna slide too!
I follow you on fa ebook!
Comment about the blog. Honestly, I love it as is. You are real a d do real projects. How about helping a reader out once a month or so, and giving advice or helping someone local complete a project they didn’t think they could DIY. But really the site is fab!
I’m a follower on Facebook. Posted on my wall page.
Well, I know I’m kinda late, so let me say “Happy belated Birthday!”. Being 40 really is great. Like the commercial says, I wouldnt go back to 20 unless I could take my 40-something brain with me. No truer words have been spoken!
I really can’t think of anything I don’t like about your blog. There are many things, however, that I DO like. A couple that come to mind are how you list all of the tools needed for a project, and how you provide pics of each step so there’s no guessing if I’m doing it correctly.
I was not gonna enter. . but I really want to win that wine crate, the paint brushes, and salt and pepper shakers. . .I LOVE seeing your blog grow!!!
I absolutely love how fearless you are with your DIY projects! And how clear your tutorials are. And, how you support other bloggers. Basically, you rock. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!
As for a second comment, is this the best giveaway or what?!? Would totally inspire me to get moving on several of my projects!

I stumbled onto your website by chance. After thinking long and hard about whether to create my own, I decided to look at others. I was literally hitting next at the top of Blogger and I found Pretty Hand Girl. Best thing to ever happen to me! You explain everything in detail and make it fun, not complicated! Thank you.
I now follow you on facebook.
